Realities of Working a 9-5

Sunday 14 January 2018

A few months ago, I left my job at the gym and started a new one working in an office. When I left, I was SO excited to wave goodbye to working weekends, 12 hour shifts and late nights in the office.

And don't get me wrong, I love the routine of knowing exactly when I'll be home at night, having the same working hours each week and Friday feeling is just the best. But there are a few things I've had to adjust to, and some harsh realities I've discovered in the last three months...

1. 6am becomes a normal time of the day. I'm used to there only being one 6 o'clock in the day, and it certainly wasn't the morning one. But what's worse, is you end up waking up at the same time on a weekend too!

2. What I like to call 'Desk Podge', getting a little belly because you're sat on your butt all day, with a seemingly endless pit of snacks in your desk drawer.

3. Falling asleep at 9pm because somehow sitting looking at a screen all day is EXHAUSTING.

4. Feeling like you should have loads of free time now that you're working regular hours but actually, you still have next-to-none.

5. Popping to town or the doctors after work and realising that they shut at 5.30pm.

6. Going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark during the winter months. Is there anything more depressing?!

7. When you want to chill and do fun stuff at the weekends - until the entire two days are taken up by adult responsibilities like running errands, doing laundry, food shopping... and before you know it, Monday again!

Can you guys relate to any of these?!

Love,
Sian xo

    1. I literally ask myself that question every single day Rosie ahaha, I remember being at uni and going on a night out until 4am and then getting up for uni at 7am and it was no big deal - too old for that now! xo

  3. Yes girl I can relate haha! I'm a teacher, so I do tbf get to get away from the task at times and move around which is good, but 9-5 (more like 8-6 for me) can be draining! I love my job but I can for sure relate!

  4. I'm a full time blogger and last year I decided to take some time off as my "work time" got way too much for me so I can relate to so many of the points you made lovely. Self-care is so important and I highly recommen taking time for yourself sometimes. I can relate to falling asleep at 9pm babe, more like 7pm for me haha! 🌸💗✨

  5. I'm self employed and work from home so I can't relate to any of this and I've never had a 9-5 but I really admire those who do! I love the sound of having such a solid routine but my days tend to be a bit all over the place!

    1. Don't get me wrong it is really nice to have a routine a lot of the time, the only thing is it can get a little monotonous, that's the main thing I've struggled to adjust to! xo

  6. I don't have that problem yet as I am a student but oh can't wait to have that routine once I am done (not!). Oh well! Mostly everyone has to do it.

    1. Ah you'll miss student days so much once it's over, honestly! I really do haha! The routine is quite nice but all of a sudden you have to be a proper adult and it's a bit of a shock to the system haha! xo

    1. I used to be on shifts like that when I was at the gym and I hated never knowing whether I was coming or going! I much prefer being in a routine these days xo

  8. I seriously relate to this - literally going to and from work in the dark and only seeing a glimpse of the "sun" when you pop out for lunch! Also the constant tiredness - how does sitting & staring at a screen all day manage to get so tiring?!

  10. This has been my life for pretty much a decade... Not gonna lie, I'd like a bit of a change, but my creative side isn't as dominant as I'd like to be, so I feel a bit stuck in a job that is so boring right now, I'm so frustrated. However, getting a new job isn't easy, so I feel even more stuck with this one.

  12. So relatable. I hate having to take time off work in order to see the doctor or visit the bank.
